Hawaii Police Department officers spent Wednesday afternoon pursuing a white pickup truck in the Kailua-Kona area after the driver reportedly failed to stop for officers when they attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation in Hilo.

Officers initially attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation around 4:30 p.m. in Hilo, however, the driver failed to stop, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Officers followed the vehicle from East Hawaii to Kailua-Kona.

Lt. Daniel Malakar said police were “watching” rather than chasing the vehicle. He said the pursuit was relatively slow speed and emphasized police were careful not to put the public “any jeopardy” during the event.

After receiving more information about the nature of the incident, Malakar said police called off the pursuit in the Kona area around 6 p.m. Hilo police, who know the identity of the man, are continuing the investigation.
