Habitat for Humanity golf tourney Oct. 7
Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii’s inaugural golf tournament is set for Oct. 7 at Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club.
The format will be four-person team best ball. Entry fee of $300 per player includes one mulligan, continental breakfast, lunch and entry to the awards ceremony. Space is limited to 72 golfers.
Businesses can participate and contribute to Habitat’s mission by becoming hole sponsors.

Honokaa basketball clinic Oct. 11-13
There will be a basketball clinic Oct. 11 to 13 at the Honokaa Parks and Recreation gym featuring Alika Smith, head coach of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I champion Kalaheo Mustangs.
Youngsters in kindergarten through sixth grade will go from 9 a.m. to noon, while instructors will work with students in grades seven through 12 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Cycling club rides to Saddle Road bypass
The Hawaii Cycling Club’s Oct. 5 club ride will be on the new Saddle Road bypass.
The ride will start at 8 a.m. near the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and the bypass.
The ride will be out and back entirely on the new road — a distance of 20 miles.
The ride is free and open to members and nonmembers. Separate groups will accommodate riders of different abilities. Parking and other information will be in future notices. For more information visit hawaiicyclingclub.com.
Kukio swim is Oct. 5
The 10th annual Kukio Blue Water Swim, which benefits the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, is scheduled for 8 a.m. Oct. 5.
The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim in Uluweuweu Bay.
Athletes can register online by Oct. 3 at kukio.net for $50; 18 and younger, $20. Fee includes race shirt, swim cap and brunch.
Race day registration is $60 each — shirt is not guaranteed for late entries

IKL championships
Nov. 2 in Kona
The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host its ninth annual IKL Karate Championship from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
IKL branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California will attend.
The tournament will feature competition in kata, forms; kumite, sparring; and kobudo, weaponry, for children, teenagers and adults.
The free tournament is open to the public.

HI-PAL hoops results
More than 80 youths on 15 teams participated in the HI-PAL Click It or Ticket 12-and-Under Hoops Championships Friday through Sunday at Waiakea Uka Gym.
The Hawaii Warriors sixth-graders outgunned the Hawaii Warriors seventh-graders 52-32 to claim the tournament title. Kiai Apele led the champions with 16 points and Keawe Silva added 12. Randon Arima scored 10 for the runners-up.
The Keaau Chargers — led by Gabriel Bergen’s 19 points — finished third, defeating the Fly Girls 43-17. Also participating in the event were Kohala NSP, Panaewa Sharpshooters, Piopio Bears, Kona Shut D I and II, Kona Stingrays, Stray Kats, Waiakea Titans, Konawaena, St. Joseph and Paiea.

Mauna Kea Polo
starts Oct. 6
The Mauna Kea Polo Club’s 2013 season begins Oct. 6 and runs through Dec. 15. Games are held at 1 p.m. Sundays at Waikii Ranch polo field. Gates open to the public at noon.
Tickets are $5 per person; free for children 12 and younger and military personnel with valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at the gate or at Wishard Gallery in Waimea.

Horseshoe club begins play Oct. 17
The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club will start its eight-week fall sanctioned doubles league Oct. 17. All league games are played from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Palm Court horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at Old Kona Airport Park.
League fees are $5 per week.

Keiki Tri slated
for Oct. 19
The Hawaii Police Department’s Hawaii Isle Police Activities League and the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation are co-sponsoring the Keiki Triathlon Oct. 19 in Kailua-Kona. The event is open to youth ages 7 through 14.
Nine- to 14-year-olds start the triathlon with a 100-yard swim at the Kona Community Aquatic Center, followed by a 3.2-mile bike ride and a 1-mile run within the Old Kona Airport Park complex.
Seven- and 8-year-olds race half those distances.

Ward hits hole-in-one
Steven Ward used a 7-wood to hit a hole-in-one Sunday on the seventh hole at Mauna Lani Resort’s South Course. Ward hit from the blue tees for a 217-yard shot that was witnessed by Neil Veith and Bill Weigang.
