County offers photography classes

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is registering participants for beginner, intermediate and advanced photography classes and a dark room class taught by Robert Weygand Sr. Morning and evening classes are planned.

Registration runs through Oct. 4; classes begin Oct. 7. Class size is limited. For more information or to register, call Marshall Tohara at 327-3565.

AARP driver safety class scheduled

Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Class at 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.

This is a refresher class for older drivers that does not include driving or written tests. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eye sight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections, drinking and driving and more.

Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.

Meditation retreat
with Harrison set

“The Poetry of Awakening,” a silent meditation retreat with Gavin Harrison, is slated from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Namaste Estates, 15-1883 21st St., Hawaiian Paradise Park, Puna. Registration is $20 to $25, plus a recommended donation of $40 to $100.

The retreat features silence, meditation, reflection and dharma interaction. Longing, fire, union and the capacity for awakened love to transform lives will be explored. Harrison will share a selection of poetry from his forthcoming book, “Petals and Blood: Stories, Dharma and Poems of Ecstasy, Awakening and Annihilation.” Retreats are nondenominational and open to beginning and experienced meditators. Aloha Quilters of Kona meets Saturday

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.

The quilters work in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Richards awards recipients announced

Friends of the Future, Hilo Medical Center and Kona Hospital Foundation were recently named recipients of Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Community Awards.

Friends of the Future Hawaii Collaborative Health Initiative received $5,000 to purchase simulation equipment to train neonatal resuscitation team members at Kona Community and North Hawaii Community hospitals. Hilo Medical Center received $10,000 to renovate one of its semi-private patient care rooms. Kona Hospital Foundation received $10,000 to purchase a nephroscope and resectoscope, enabling more of Kona Community Hospital’s urological patients to be treated on site.

The Bank of Hawaii Monty Richards Community Award was established in 2008 and supports Hawaii Island nonprofit organizations that demonstrate innovative approaches to improving the quality of life on Hawaii Island.
