Police arrested 26 motorists for alleged drunken driving between Sept. 9 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than 21.

Police arrested 26 motorists for alleged drunken driving between Sept. 9 and Sunday. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 905 DUI arrests compared with 995 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, six; Puna, six; Ka‘u, one; Hamakua, one; and South Kohala, one, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

There have been 956 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,049 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent, police said.

So far this year, there have been 21 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent. Five fatalities were related to drugs only, one to alcohol only and six were related to a combination of both, police said.
