Power Self Storage-Kuakini recently donated $2,206 to Kona Hospital Foundation.
Power Self Storage manager Reba Mae Silva presented the funds that were raised at a lien sale auction. The proceeds from one auctioned unit were dedicated to the charity.
James Higgins, chairman of Kona Hospital Foundation board of trustees said the funds will be used to purchase new medical technology, expanded services and enhanced facilities for Kona Community Hospital.

Shipping fair to help agricultural businesses
A shipping fair scheduled for Oct. 4 at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority will give agricultural companies the information and tools they need to ship their products off island.
The event is the fifth in the state hosted by Hawaii Pacific Export Council in partnership with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. The Shipping Worldwide, Interstate and Interisland Fair will provide guidance on specific routing and shipping options via one-on-one meetings with shipping experts from a number of local, domestic and international providers. The fair will also include visits to shipping facilities and opportunities to practice filling out shipping documents.

Fundraising course offered
A four-day course will teach the fundamentals of fundraising to nonprofit organizations and help them overcome challenges.
Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Aloha Chapter, the course is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 4; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24; noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 8; and 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 21 at North Hawaii Community Hospital.
The course is designed by experienced fundraising professionals to help organizations meet real-world needs. It will include case studies and projects for groups and individuals, and offer a complete overview of the development function, featuring the most current information and techniques.
The fee for the course is $250 for Association of Fundraising Professionals Aloha Chapter members and $350 for nonmembers. The workshop is open to fundraising professionals, executive directors and board members from all Big Island nonprofits.

Island Fish & Chips
closes for remodel
Island Fish & Chips at Kings’ Shops is closed for remodeling and will reopen in late fall with a more extensive menu.
“The new face-lift will include a larger kitchen which allows us to expand the menu,” said Island Fish & Chips owner Tiffiny Kost.
Diners can expect new offerings such as shrimp Caesar salad, fish tacos, clam chowder and fried pineapple with a haupia dip as well as a new kids’ menu. A selection of beer, wine and frozen cocktails will also be offered. By the end of the year, Island Fish & Chips will also serve breakfast.
The locally owned and operated restaurant has been in business since 2001 and is known for its lakeside setting and a casual dining.
Weight loss seminar offered Sept. 23
Kona Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery team will give an overview of its new, comprehensive weight loss program 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 23 at Kona Community Hospital’s administration building in conference room 2.
The free seminar will present resources and options to address the complex disease of obesity.
The Kona Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program is a multidisciplinary, collaborative effort between Kona Community Hospital and Alii Health Center.

Aloha Petroleum helps March of Dimes
Aloha Petroleum Ltd. recently presented the March of Dimes, Hawaii Chapter with a $17,916 donation to support the organization’s mission to improve the health of babies and expectant mothers.
Aloha Petroleum raised the money in January and February through canister donations and by selling World’s Finest Chocolate at Aloha Island Mart convenience stores.
Cochon event comes
to Mauna Kea
Celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Cochon555 US Tour, Cochon Island brings together five chefs and five heritage breed pigs, notable media and food champions to celebrate responsible farming and the spirit of aloha at the inaugural island expression of cochon Sept. 21 at the Mauna Keach Beach Hotle’s oceanfront luau grounds. Each chef will be challenged to prepare a menu created from the entirety of heritage breed pigs for epicureans. VIPs are admitted at 2 p.m. and general admission is at 3 p.m. Tickes are $125 for general adminission and $200 for VIPs.
Participating chefs include Mauna Kea Beach Hotel’s Peter Pahk; Bistro Molokini’s Michael Young; Pili Group’s Mark Noguchi; Lee Anne Wong; and Town’s Ed Kenney. Host chef Peter Pahk will curate. Concert series
comes to Waikoloa
Beginning Dec. 28, a monthly concert series will bring big names including Rob Schneider, Joan Rivers, Randy Travis, Mos Def and Bill Maher to Hilton Waikoloa Village.
The series launches with singer Brian Evans and a special appearance by William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk on “Star Trek.”
The series, once known as The Maui Celebrizty Series, became the Big Island Celebrity Series when Evans and Enrique Grullon decided to bring the show to Kona. More than a dozen concerts were held at The Maui Theatre in Lahaina prior to the move.

Sheraton restaurant introduces new menu
A new menu at Rays on the Bay at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay highlights chef Jayson Malla’s local upbringing and dishes cooked in the resort’s recently restored imu pit.
Kalua pork pizza, smoked turkey and prime rib are among the new selections offered by Malla and his culinary team. For more than 10 years, the large, underground cooking pit using heated stones went unused until its recent restoration.

Kapeckas promoted
to revenue
analytics director
Hawaiian Airlines has appointed Bryan Kapeckas to revenue analytics director. His responsibilities include supporting the company’s revenue management and commercial initiatives.
Kapeckas brings 13 years of airline revenue management experience to Hawaiian. Prior to joining Hawaiian, he served as manager, alliance and airline partnerships at JetBlue Airways where he was responsible for negotiating partnerships with international airlines. He previously served as manager, revenue management at JetBlue, and as specialist/team leader, inventory management and project manager, and revenue management trainer at U.S. Airways.
He holds a bachelor of science degree with a concentration in international politics from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Science.
Regulatory review board names officers
The Small Business Regulatory Review Board has announced its officers for 2013–14: Chu Lan Shubert-Kwock, chairman (Oahu); Anthony Borge, vice chairman (Oahu); and Leslie Mullens, second vice chairman (Maui).
Additional members are Barbara Bennett (Kauai), Kyoko Kimura (Maui), Howard Lum (Oahu) and Craig Takamine (Hawaii).
The board is responsible for providing commentary on small business impact statements to the departments that draft rules and identifying and commenting on business impact of existing administrative rules. It also makes recommendations to the governor’s office, departments or the Legislature regarding the need for administrative rule or legislative changes, makes recommendations to mayors or county councils regarding county rules and reviews small business petitions and complaints on business impact.
Sheraton hires three culinary professionals
Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay has employed Edward “Kahau” Manzo as director of food and beverage, Matthew Naula as executive chef and Jayson Malla as chef de cuisine of Rays on the Bay.
Manzo previously served as director of food and beverage and executive chef at the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas in Princeville, Kauai. He holds an associate’s degree in food service from Maui Community College and graduated first in his class from the Western Culinary Institute.
Naula held the executive chef position at Mr. Ojisan restaurant on Oahu. He studied culinary education at the Gros Bonnett Culinary Academy and Kapiolani Community College.
Before his promotion to chef de cuisine at Rays on the Bay, Malla worked at Aulani Disney Resort and Spa on Oahu. He holds a degree from the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore.
