The second day of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge came crisp and easy for the University of Hawaii volleyball team.
Emily Hartong smashed 13 kills and the Rainbow Wahine hit .451 on Friday night in a 25-12, 25-13, 25-19 victory against Northwestern at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Hartong hit .385 on her 26 swings, while Kalei Adolpho attacked at a .667 rate as Hawaii (7-1) won for the second straight night in their final preseason tournament.
In contrast to a three-set victory against Portland State a night earlier, the Wahine faced much less resistance against the Wildcats (4-4), who hit just .042.
Hartong posted seven kills in Game 1, and UH went on runs of 6-1 and 7-3 to run away with the second set.
Tai Manu-Olevau added nine kills (.471) and Nikki Taylor contributed seven on .600 hitting to go along with six block assists.
Stepanie Holthus led Northwestern with seven kills.
UH will try for a tournament sweep at 7 p.m. today against Arizona.
Soccer
Tiana Fujimoto netted a hat trick as Hawaii beat Idaho State a 4-1 on the opening night of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Oahu.
Freshman Ryan Daniel also scored for UH (3-2), which won its third straight match, while Crystal Pascua had two assists.
Fujimoto scored twice in the second half to notch the program’s first hat trick since 2009.
Amanda Ellsworth scored for the Bengals (2-4).
The Wahine, who took 23 shots en route to their first home win, play Portland State at 5 p.m. today.
