Big Island police have in custody 23-year-old Robert Carlos Garcia, who escaped Sept. 4 from a minimum security correctional facility in Hilo.

Acting on a tip, police located Garcia around 10:25 a.m. Thursday at a home on Ohai Street in Hilo, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Garcia allegedly tried to flee police, but was apprehended following a brief foot pursuit.

At 4:17 p.m., police charged Garcia with the escape offense. His bail was set at $10,000.

Garcia was one of two inmates who escaped from the Hale Nani Correctional Center in Hilo. On Sept. 6, 27-year-old Andrew Marshall Wanat, who has no permanent address, was arrested in Kailua-Kona in connection with the escape.
