Kamuela concerts coming up
Plans for the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra’s upcoming season are moving forward. The continuing generosity of benefactors has made it possible for the orchestra to survive and grow, though more contributions are welcome. Fans of the orchestra may help by participating in Foodland’s Give Aloha program.
Foodland, partnering with the Western Union Foundation, matches donations to nonprofit and charitable organizations with this annual program. The orchestra is participating this year. The program runs through Sept. 30.
Customers show their Maikai Card at the register, then make a donation to the organization of their choice, up to $249 per person.
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra will begin its 2013-14 season collaborating with the University of Hawaii at Hilo music department to produce a holiday concert in Hilo. The program will include Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 26 (Christmas Symphony),” Michel Richard de Lalande’s “Christmas Symphony” and selected choral works.
Jan. 26 marks the orchestra’s 10th anniversary. A Jan. 19 concert will reprise favorite works from previous seasons. The program at Kahilu Theater will include Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”
The orchestra’s third annual concerto competition will be held Feb. 1 and 2. The winning players will perform, with orchestral accompaniment, at the orchestra’s spring concert slated March 30 at the tennis pavilion at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows.
Rehearsals underway for holiday concert
Waimea Community Chorus will present its holiday concert accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Kona. Performances are slated Dec. 14 and 15 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea and Dec. 24 at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
The first half of the choral concert will showcase sacred seasonal music, both classical and modern, including selections from Maurice Ravel, Johann Sebastian Bach and Johann Pachelbel. The second half will feature light-hearted holiday fare, including medleys of popular carols, humorous songs and popular swing-era hits.
This is the chorus’ 20th annual holiday concert. New members are welcome. Rehearsals are held at 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays at St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea. Auditions are not required, but prospective members should be able to consistently attend the weekly rehearsals. Hoku concert announced
Opera and crossover star Suzanne Vinnik will headline the annual fall Hoku Concert Series event benefiting Aloha Performing Arts Company slated for Nov. 24 at a private residence. Thomas Yee from Honolulu will provide piano accompaniment.

comes to Waimea
Waimea Community Theatre and Chorus announces the first in its series of reader’s theater performances to supplement its 50th anniversary season of productions: Neil Simon’s comedy “The Odd Couple,” directed by Elsbeth McKeen.
“The Odd Couple” shares the story of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison, the play that spawned a movie and a long-running television series with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. This production will be presented at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Saint James’ Episcopal Church in Waimea. The show is free, but a voluntary donation for the Food Basket will be accepted.

Hoist takes honors
at Wyoming show
Shelley Hoist of Laha Ole Palm Art in Captain Cook recently won an honorable mention in the accents category at the 21st annual Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., with her “Three Sisters.”
A signature event of the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, the conference, hosted by Teton Home and Living magazine, brought together hundreds of crafts people, scholars, collectors, interior designers, architects and fashion designers with an interest in the West.
