Scouts planning Saturday fundraiser
An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and silent auction fundraiser is scheduled from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Hongwanji hall in Kealakekua. Cost per ticket is $7; children 6 and younger are free.
The event is sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 12 and raises funds for the scouts’ activities and outings for the school year. For more information, call Glenn Hirowatari, cub master, at 322-2278 and leave a message.
Health care
forums planned
Community Enterprises is holding a two-part program on health care in West Hawaii. Presentations are slated from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15 at Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Events Pavilion. The series is intended for anyone interested in the status of health care and those wishing to learn more about the Affordable Care Act.
Tuesday’s Community Forum will focus on critical health issues and actions taken by West Hawaii health providers to address them. Presenters include Sharon Vitousek, former director of the North Hawaii Outcomes Project; Susan Hunt, director of the Hawaii Island Beacon Project; Jay Kreuzer, CEO of Kona Community Hospital; Richard Taaffe, executive director of the West Hawaii Community Health Center; and Jeffrey Tolan, West Hawaii medical chief for Kaiser Permanente. Sen. Josh Green will join the speakers for a panel discussion during the second hour of the forum.
The October event will focus on the Affordable Care Act. Tom Matsuda, implementation manager of the Affordable Care Act in Hawaii, and Coral Andrews, executive director of the Hawaii Health Connector, will speak. Green will join them for a panel discussion. Representatives from the West Hawaii Community Health Center, Hope Services Hawaii and the HIV AIDS Foundation, trained as marketplace assisters, will answer attendees’ questions.
Sherry Bracken will moderate both events. Pupu and beverages will be served.
State beekeeper speaking Monday
Hawaii state apiarist Danielle Downey, tasked with creating, developing and managing honeybees, and beekeeper Michael Domeier of Volcano Island Honey will present “The Challenges of Beekeeping in Hawaii” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the North Kohala Public Library.
Downey will lead a workshop at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Iole, where Volcano Island Honey’s bees pollinate blossoms in Hawaii’s largest organic macadamia nut orchard. Both events are free to the public. For more information, call the library at 889-6655 or Iole at 889-5151.
Cook’s final voyage recounted Monday
Capt. James Cook pulled strings with the Admiralty to command his third mission into the Pacific, setting into motion the circumstances that would lead to his death at Kealakekua and the opening of Hawaii to the West. Historian Boyd D. Bond will present a close look at Cook’s ultimate voyage and the impact it had on the Hawaiian people, Cook’s crew and the captain at 7 p.m. Monday at Lyman Museum in Hilo. Boyd will share observations recorded by the men serving under Cook, offering firsthand accounts of the voyage and the fateful encounter between two cultures. Admission is $3; free to museum members. Library book club meeting Tuesday
The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai to discuss “Blonde” by Joyce Carol Oates. The book reimagines the inner, poetic and spiritual life of Norma Jeane Baker — the fated celebrity the world came to know as Marilyn Monroe. Light refreshments are served; new members are welcome. The club will discuss “The Woman Who Fell From the Sky” by Jennifer Steil in October.
