Five people escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when their rental boat ran aground on the reef fronting the grounds of the former Kona Lagoon Hotel in Keauhou.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Hawaii Fire Department personnel received a report of a foundered skiff about 20 yards offshore of the former hotel, located between the now-closed Keauhou Beach Hotel and Keauhou Kona Surf and Racquet Club. Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros said it appeared the rental vessel simply came too close to shore and ran aground.

The passengers suffered no serious injuries and were deemed in good condition, he said. None were transported by medics to a hospital.

Medeiros said it appeared no fuel was leaking from the vessel. The Department of Land and Natural Resources will oversee salvage of the vessel, he said.

Voice mails and emails to DLNR were not responded to as of press time.
