I Can Cope Class scheduled Sept. 28
American Cancer Society and Kaiser Permanente will hold the next free I Can Cope class for people facing cancer and their caregivers 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 28 at Kaiser Permanente Kona Clinic’s ground floor conference room.
“Keeping Well in Mind and Body” will introduce the wellness profile in cancer care and teach ways of maintaining health in spite of cancer. Participants will learn and practice simple exercises and stress reduction techniques. Janet Tarentino will be the featured speaker.
Registration is required by calling American Cancer Society at 935-0025. All cancer patients, regardless of insurance and insurance type are welcome to attend.
Imiloa program offers
a tour of the universe
Imiloa Astronomy Center’s planetarium program, “3-D Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe,” offers a tour of the universe using the planetarium’s 3-D stereoscopic projection system during the quarterly program at 7 p.m. Friday.
Planetarium manager Shawn Laatsch will take the audience to the local neighborhood of Earth’s solar system, including planets and their moons, then to the rings of Saturn, other star systems with planets, Orion nebula, globular clusters and out to other galaxies and to the edge of the known universe. This will be a voyage through time and space using imagery from Mauna Kea observatories.
Tickets are $10 for nonmembers and $8 for center members. Member level discounts apply. Tickets may be purchased ahead of time at the Imiloa front desk or by calling 969-9703.
Vigil remembers suicide victims
A candlelight vigil in memory of loved ones lost to suicide begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Old Kona Airport Park beach. The event is sponsored by West Hawaii Suicide Prevention Task Force. For more information, call 333-8988 or visit preventsuicidekona.com.

Volunteers sought for Kamilo Point cleanup
Volunteers and vehicles are needed at Hawaii Wildlife Fund’s Kamilo Point beach cleanup Saturday.
Participants meet at 7:45 a.m. at Waiohinu Park and are expected to return by 3 p.m. Volunteers should bring lunch, snacks, sun and wind protection, water and sturdy footwear. Waivers are required for children younger than 18 who are not accompanied by a parent.
This event will be the first of four in collaboration with Recycle Hawaii. Objectives are to collect and remove marine debris from the shoreline and attempt to sort debris that can be used for the Ocean Plastic line of dish soap by Method.
