Raul Gomez and Larry Llamas each scored a goal to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 2-0 win over the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Friday.

It was the Vulcans’ 2013-14 men’s soccer team’s season opener and the first match under Lance Thompson, the new UH-Hilo director of soccer. The collegiate match was held at the Waipio Soccer Park on Oahu.

“It was our first game of the season and we’re really still learning about ourselves,” Thompson said. “We only had a scrimmage game and that was no gauge for us. But we got a good feel for where we are. We’ll build on this and be ready when we play BYU-Hawaii (on Sept. 12 in Hilo).”

Gomez scored on a header at the 35:12 mark in the first half, off a cross to the far post. Teammates Roberto Mariscal and Llamas were awarded assists on the play.

Then in the second half, Llamas scored off an assist from Tigran Tiraturyan at the 59:15 mark to extend the CSSB (1-0-1) lead to 2-0 over the Vulcans (0-1).

UH-Hilo’s Ian Watanabe led UH-Hilo’s attack and had two shots on goal turned away by CSSB goalie Jeff Salt.

“We lost to a really organized team and a team that played with a lot of energy,” Thompson said. “They were more up to the challenge today and they played with a lot more aggression than we did.”

The Vulcans return home and host Brigham Young University-Hawaii on Sept. 12 at UH-Hilo.
