Hawaii Community College is still in the market for a University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii campus director.
Chancellor Noreen Yamane told a gathering of West Hawaii community members last week the college’s search committee had extended a job offer to one candidate, but that person did not end up taking the job.
“Unfortunately there was a salary issue,” Yamane said. “I can only negotiate to a certain amount. Because of that, the one candidate simply did not accept.”
Three candidates rose to the top, following the initial job posting earlier this year, Yamane said. One of those candidates removed themselves from consideration. The final candidate did meet with community members, business leaders and Hawaii Community College and University of Hawaii-Hilo officials, Yamane said. The chancellor said she got the impression the community may not have felt that person was a good fit for West Hawaii.
While the search is ongoing, other administrators are taking turns coming to the West Hawaii center in Kealakekua to provide administrative assistance, Yamane said.
“It’s not going as quickly as hoped,” she said. “We do want to find that person for the West Hawaii Center.”
Doris Chang, Yamane’s secretary, said Friday the job was first advertised in March, with an initial application cut off in May. Officials never took down the posting, however, and interested candidates may still apply via the University of Hawaii website at workatuh.hawaii.edu.
Minimum requirements for the position, according to the job posting, include having graduated from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in educational administration, business administration, public administration, or in a field in which the university offers an instructional program, having attained at least the rank of associate professor or the ability to demonstrate a record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment, five years of experience as an administrator or equivalent position in higher education, as well as an understanding of a number of policy issues that face higher education institutions.
