Police seek information about robbery, auto theft
Police are renewing their request for information about a robbery and auto theft last week in Puna’s Leilani Estates subdivision.
A 41-year-old man reported that sometime between midnight and 3 a.m. Aug. 20, he was assaulted outside his house on Maile Street and a car was stolen from the driveway, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The attacker is described as a local male, average height and weight with medium-length dark hair and a “local accent.” The car is described as a blue 2005 Kia Optima four-door sedan, license plate ZAT 755.

Army opening training areas to bow hunters
PTA areas open for hunting Saturday and Sunday
Army officials are opening several training areas for bow hunting within the Pohakuloa Training Area 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Training areas 10 and 11, as well as the northern portion of training area 2 (on the Mauna Kea side of new Saddle Road), will be open for bow hunting of mammals only. Hunters are allowed one pig, one goat and one sheep, per day, in keeping with state bag limits. Shooting sheep with blue collars is not permitted.
All hunters must check in and check out at either Kilohana, on Saddle Road between mile markers 43 and 44, or Puu Huluhulu, at the intersection of Mauna Kea Access Road and Saddle Road, hunter’s check-in stations. Check out no later than 7:30 p.m. each day.
Hunting passes will be provided at the check-in stations beginning 5 p.m. Friday. These passes must be signed and placed on the vehicle’s dashboard. Hunters who do not have a signed hunting pass on their dashboard will be barred from hunting for 30 days.
Hunter access to training areas 10 and 11 is through gates 1 through 6 on Saddle Road. Access to training area 2 is through gates 1 through 5. The new Saddle Road alignment near mile marker 40 is off limits to all traffic except construction vehicles.
Firearms, alcoholic beverages, all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes and recreational vehicles are not allowed in the training and hunting areas.

Leaking fuel tank washes up on Kauai
LIHUE, Kauai — Emergency crews responded to examine the contents of a leaking fuel tank that washed up on a Kauai beach.
The aluminum tank washed up Wednesday on Waipouli Beach near the Courtyard by Marriott Kauai at Coconut Beach hotel, Kauai County spokeswoman Sarah Blane told The Garden Island.
“The container had approximately five gallons of a liquid inside,” she wrote in an email. “Caution tape was posted around the tank while HAZMAT crews investigated.”
Carl Berg, the Japanese tsunami marine debris coordinator for Surfrider Kauai, and Kauai District Fisheries Biologist Don Heacock were the first responders.
“We moved it to make sure it wouldn’t wash back out,” Berg said. “To us, it definitely smelled like diesel fuel, but the tank was not really very heavy.”
Japanese characters on the side of the tank and the large amount of marine growth led Berg to conclude that the tank came from Japan after the March 2011 tsunami.
The concentration of barnacles and seaweed indicated the tank had not been full of liquid recently.
Man sentenced in break-in at home

LIHUE, Kauai — A man who claimed he could not remember breaking into the Hawaii home of “South Park” co-creator Trey Parker was sentenced Wednesday to a year in jail and five years’ probation.
Joseph Genaro Bonachita, 45, of Hanapepe, in May pleaded no contest to amended counts of misdemeanor criminal trespass and terroristic threatening plus illegally keeping a weapon in his vehicle.
He was sentenced in 5th Circuit Court to six-month sentences on the misdemeanor counts and probation for the weapons count.
Bonachita claimed he had been drinking and could not recall breaking into Parker’s home in Kapaa early on July 1, 2009. Judge Kathleen Watanabe told Bonachita that by blaming alcohol, he was deflecting accountability.
“I am telling you to your face that I don’t buy your story,” Watanabe said. “It is one of convenience.”
