Harbor Gallery has announced the winners of its 2013 Summer Wood Show. Hundreds of ballots were cast by visitors to the show, and 18 out of 56 entries were sold.
Scott Hare took Best of Show for “Wood Rose,” an intricately carved piece of Norfolk Island pine, soaked in oils and polished.
Stan Kerr and Jelena Clay collaborated to win the sculpture category with their “Mango Platter,” featuring wood burning of lauae fern leaves.
Michael Patrick Smith won first prize in turning for his “Fern Vessel,” made of Norfolk Island pine, sitting on a stand, with detailed pyrography.
Frank Chase took first in joinery with his sideboard, “Smorgasbord,” featuring curly koa and wenge accents.
David Weaver, former state champion archer, took the open category with his “Hawaiian Archery Set” made with koa, bamboo, black palm and fiberglass.
Ten percent of the show’s proceeds will be donated to Kohala Watershed Partnership and used to improve its educational outreach within area schools.
