Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers the following events in September. All programs are free, but park entrance fees apply. Events are co-sponsored by the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association; a $2 donation helps support park programs.
c Hawaiian music, language and haku mele experts Kenneth Makuakane and Kaliko Beamer-Trapp will lead “Haku Mele: A Beginner’s Hawaiian Songwriter’s Retreat” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 at the Environmental Educational Center. Participants will create original Hawaiian compositions through interactive presentations and small group sessions in haku mele and leo. The class is limited to 20 participants. Contact Elizabeth Bell at 985-6019 or Elizabeth_bell@nps.gov to reserve a space no later than Friday.
c Park Ranger Jay Robinson will present “Grand Adventures in the Southwest Desert,” a raft journey into the heart of the Grand Canyon National Park, from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Kilauea Visitor Center. Attendees will encounter bighorn sheep, condors and lizards, and sleep beneath the stars with scorpions, tarantulas and rattlesnakes. They will explore narrow slot canyons and the rock deserts of Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks and Vermillion Cliffs and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.
c Hilo One, featuring Likeke Teanio on ukulele and slack key guitar, Aaron Agres on electric upright bass, and Russell Mauga on 12-string guitar, will perform Hawaiian music from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Kilauea Visitor Center.
c Amy Kaawaloa and Malia Macabio will present “Ulana Lauhala” from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai. Kaawaloa and Macabio will explain how to select and prepare pandanus leaves and share the intricacies of weaving lauhala.
c Kahuku Junior Ranger Day is slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 28. Keiki of all ages and park rangers will connect the culture, people and aina through oli, GPS and compass as they explore the park’s Kahuku Unit in Ka‘u. Participants will see, smell and touch a variety of kalo as Sam and Edna Baldado share their love for the many varieties and uses of this native staple food. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen and hat. Wear long pants, jacket and closed-toe shoes. At least one adult must accompany the children. The event and lunch are free, but registration is required. Call 985-6019 by Sept. 24. Co-sponsored by the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center. The entrance to the Kahuku Unit is located near mile marker 70.5 on Highway 11. Meet near the parking area.
‘Fill the Boot’ for MDA
Firefighters will be on Hawaii’s streets through the weekend, starting Thursday, asking drivers to “Fill the Boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The local MDA chapter serves more than 500 families affected by various types of muscular dystrophy. Services include clinics, support groups, a summer camp for children with muscular dystrophy and medical equipment repairs.
Events are slated in Kona, Waimea and Hilo. In Kona, the Hawaii Fire Department will collect donations at Walmart on Henry Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In Waimea, the department will collect donations at the Waimea Shopping Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. In Hilo, the department will collect donations at Walmart on Makaala Street from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Funds also support some of the 300 worldwide research projects seeking better treatments and cures for the more than 40 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA.
