Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve seeking Native Hawaiian alternates for advisory council
NOAA’s Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve, part of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, is seeking applicants for two alternate seats on its advisory council.
The reserve is accepting applications for the Native Hawaiian elder alternate and Native Hawaiian alternate. Candidates are selected based on their expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying, community and professional affiliations, and views regarding the protection and management of marine resources. Applicants who are chosen as members or alternates should expect to serve a two-year term, or until a different advisory body is created pursuant to Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument’s management plan.

Museums offer free admission to members of other museums
“Celebrating Museums Month” is a month-long program to cross-promote Hawaii Island museums. In September, each will provide free admission to the members of other participating institutions when a current museum membership card is shown. Some institutions will also be offering discounts on store items or tours to these members.
This is the seventh year Hawaii Island museums have collaborated for the event. Eleven institutions across the county participate. Anyone can purchase a membership at one of the participating museums and take advantage of the discounts. Contact the individual museums for more information. Below is a list of participating museums, the benefits, and their operating hours.
Hawaii Island museums and the benefits they are offering members in September include:
- Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Gardens, which is offering free admission and 10 percent discount on all plant sales.
- Anna Ranch Heritage Center, offering free admission.
- Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center, offering free admission.
- East Hawaii Cultural Center, offering free Visual Arts Exhibitions, a 5 percent discount on art sales and 10 percent discount on gift case items.
- Imiloa Astronomy Center, offering free admission.
- Kona Historical Society, offering free admission.
- Laupahoehoe Train Museum, offering free admission.
- Lyman Museum, offering free admission and 10 percent off in Museum Shop. Special Exhibit John Howard Pierce Photography is included in admission.
- Pacific Tsunami Museum, offering free admission, no discount in store.
- The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens, offering a special gift at the Zoo Gift Shop for members of other museums.
- Volcano Art Center, no admission required to enter the center, but park admission fees apply. Museum members from participating museums receive a 10 percent gallery discount.
Space Foundation accepting achievement award nominations
The Space Foundation is accepting nominations for its highest honor, the annual General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award. The deadline to submit a nomination is Sept. 30. Awards will be presented in May 2014 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Honoring its late, long-time chairman, Gen. James E. Hill, USAF, Ret., the award recognizes outstanding individuals who distinguished themselves through lifetime contributions to humankind through exploration, development and use of space, or through use of space technology, information or resources in academic, cultural, industrial or other pursuits of broad benefit to humanity.
The 2013 award was presented posthumously to two former NASA astronauts — Neil A. Armstrong and Sally K. Ride.
Any person may nominate a candidate for the award, with the exception that individuals may not nominate themselves.
Criteria The nomination criteria must meet at least two of the following measures: Significantly advanced the state-of-the-art of space technology, significantly advanced humankind’s understanding of space or space technology, significantly contributed to public understanding of, or support for, space endeavors, significantly and positively shaped governmental policy toward space, effectively interpreted, through visual or other communicative arts, the majesty and importance of space, effectively provided — by management, advocacy or design — significant, enduring or crucial space systems or infrastructure or effectively employed space technologies, research systems, or space-derived data to improve the human condition through the artistic, scientific or humanistic endeavor.
The mission of the Space Foundation is “to advance space-related endeavors to inspire, enable and propel humanity.” Nominees must exemplify the Space Foundation mission by meeting at least three of the following criteria: has written or published papers, textbooks, articles, etc., relating to the exploration, development or utilization of space, or has spoken in public forums such as conferences and symposia, has been active in promoting and disseminating information about space exploration, development or utilization through any medium, has been active with nonspace-related groups — whether professional, fraternal, industrial, academic or community based — resulting in a transfer of space knowledge to other professions or groups, has been active in community or public service not related to normal job responsibilities, has volunteered or otherwise contributed significant or extended effort on behalf of the Space Foundation and its mission.
