Robotics team plans steak fry fundraiser
Kealakehe High School’s Tiki Tech robotics team qualified for the International Robotics competition each of the past three years and looks to continue that success in 2013-14 with support from the community. The team will hold a steak fry fundraiser at KTA on Palani Road beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 24. Tickets cost $12 each, or $20 for two, and may be purchased in advance from Tiki Tech members.
Kealakehe High sets open house for Tuesday
Kealakehe High School will host its annual open house Tuesday. Parents will begin in their student’s citizenship/advisory classroom — this appears as period 8 on a student schedule — at 5:15 p.m. They will spend 10 minutes in each class, with five minutes passing time between “periods” until the open house concludes at 7 p.m. Parent and school information will be available in the library before the event.
Time with teachers is not meant for conferencing; appointments can be made, if needed. Parents should have their student’s schedule. Schedules and assistance will also be available in the library.

Kealakehe High council meets Aug. 15
The Kealakehe High School Community Council will meet from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Aug. 15 in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room.
Items on the agenda for discussion include the principal survey, council self-assessment results and council officers.

New ocean course offered this fall
Hawaii Community College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training and the Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence will offer “Communicating Ocean Science for Marine Educators, Operators and Enthusiasts” this fall.
The course is designed for informal educators, guides or tour leaders in the marine tourism and recreation industry, as well as ocean users, teachers and those interested in understanding science as an exploratory process. Participants will improve their ability to communicate about marine science concepts to diverse audiences. The course will emphasize ocean literacy principles and link Western and Hawaiian concepts of science, learning and environmental stewardship.
The 10-week course will be taught from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Kealakehe High School.
Students may receive tuition assistance using Employer Training Funds through Workforce Development. A form is available at labor.hawaii.gov/wdd/files/2012/12/ETF-FORM-2-1-121.pdf. Corn maze design contest ends Monday
The Kohala Mountain Farm Corn Maze Design Contest is open to high school and middle school students enrolled in a school garden program. Students are welcome to seek help from parents and siblings if they choose. One entry per student will be accepted. Entries are judged on overall theme, as well as maze design.
The winner’s school’s garden will receive a $1,000 gift certificate from Crop Production Services Hilo. The winning student will be awarded the opportunity to preview their design from the air on a trip for two from Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. The runner-up will receive a Kohala Zip Line Adventure for two compliments of Hawaii Forest and Trail. All students who submit a design will receive two complimentary passes to this year’s corn maze.

Ikeno receives farm bureau scholarship
The Kona County Farm Bureau has awarded its 2013 scholarship to Quentin Ikeno. He is a valedictorian of Konawaena High School’s 2013 class, and a member of the National Honor Society and Kona Boyz 4-H Club.
Ikeno will major in engineering at Western Washington University. His parents are long-time Kona County Farm Bureau members Robert and Doreen Ikeno.
Goh, Whalen named to Azusa Pacific dean’s list
Kailua-Kona residents Elizabeth Goh and Paul Whalen made the academic dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University for spring 2013. These students each achieved a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
Azusa Pacific University is an evangelical Christian university with a campus and regional centers throughout Southern California.
Isle residents earn degrees from WSU
Hawaii Island residents Ashley Malia Warner and Leslyn Hanae Ibara are among the Washington State University students to earn undergraduate degrees in 2013.
Warner, of Mountain View, earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design. Ibara received a bachelor’s degree in natural resource sciences.
