Humane Society holds ‘Primp Your Pit’ campaign

The Hawaii Island Humane Society is holding a “Primp Your Pit” campaign. Funded by PetSmart Charities, the program provides for $20 spay or neuter surgeries for more than 6,200 pit bull terriers, nationwide.

HIHS plans to spay or neuter 100 pit bull terriers and pit bull terrier mixes for the $20 rate, which includes a nail trim. The rate is available to Hawaii County residents.

County offers gentle yoga classes

The county Department of Parks and Recreation offers gentle yoga classes. Gentle yoga is a series of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Classes are $5 per session; payable at the beginning of each session. Participants should bring a yoga mat, beach towel and a bottle of water to class. Some yoga mats are available to use.

Classes are held at Hale Halawai from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays; 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Fridays; and 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays. Classes are also offered in South Kona from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays. For more information, including class location in South Kona, call 896-5302.

Elevator installation applications now online

The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations recently began accepting installation applications for new elevators and kindred equipment and personnel hoists at construction sites online only. The online form provides contractors a simple application to submit and pay for their installations.

To submit an application for new installation of elevators and kindred equipment, go to hiosh.ehawaii.gov/hip. Applicants will enter all necessary information and attach installation plans, via PDF, for review. Payments may be made by credit card or monthly billing. A chat support option will be available to assist users.

Disability advocate at Civic Center

A Hawaii Disability Rights Center advocate will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Office of Aging, Building B, at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Friday deadline for Walmart grants

The Walmart Foundation’s Hawaii State Giving Council recently announced $126,000 in grants from the first grant giving cycle for 2013 to nonprofits.

Hawaii nonprofits may apply for the grants by Friday. The minimum grant amount is $25,000. To be considered for support, prospective grantee organizations must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. More details and the online application are at walmartfoundation.org/stategiving.
