Big Island Running Company offers training program

Big Island Running Company will offer a free 16-week training program for the Honolulu Marathon.

An introductory meeting will be held at 5 p.m Aug. 15 at the Big Island Running Company store on Alii Drive.

Running schedules will be tailored to an individual’s current fitness and training goals. Runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and long runs at 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays.

Holua Tennis Center Round Robin fundraiser

The Holua Tennis Center hosts a round robin event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. All funds go toward the effort to defray the cost of newly resurfaced courts at the Mauna Loa Village complex.

The entry fee is $50 per player. The event features a slow cooker cook-off, raffle and prizes for the winners. Patrons will also be able to take advantage of deals on yearly memberships only available the day of the tournament.

Donations may be mailed to or dropped off at the Holua Tennis Center.

Biddy Basketball coaches meeting today in Waimea

Parks and Recreation-Waimea’s fall Biddy Basketball season runs from Sept. 9 through Oct. 16.

Registration for the league will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Aug. 14 at the Waimea Community Center. Players ages 5-8 may register, and the registration fee is $10.

Basketball clinics will take place Aug. 12 to 14 at the Thelma Parker Gym (3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages 5-6 and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 7-8).

A Biddy Basketball coaches meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at the Waimea Community Center. Returning coaches and coaching prospects are asked to attend.

All-Stars Biddy Basketball Camp Aug. 16-18

The Big Island All-Stars Biddy Basketball Camp will take place Aug. 16-18 at the Panaewa indoor/outdoor basketball courts. Boys and girls ages 5-8 may participate, with each session running from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The registration fee of $40 includes a T-shirt, and the application deadline is Friday. The camp is limited to 90 applicants.

A 40-and-over half-court men’s basketball league will start Aug. 14 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

West Hawaii Aikido club now accepting new members

West Hawaii Aikido club is accepting new members interested in practicing the martial art of aikido.

Students should be age 8 and up. Sensei Ray Tanaka will instruct.

Practices are Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kona Imin Center in Holualoa.

Beginner golf classes for women

Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Aug. 17.

The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

Macadamia Nut tournament Aug. 25 in Hamakua

The Macadamia Nut Tournament, which features latex-coated macadamia nuts instead of traditional golf balls, will take place at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at Hamakua Country Club. Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m., and an entry fee of $40 includes lunch and prizes. Organizers will use a Callaway scoring system.
