Kaiser Permanente Hawaii presents the following free events in West Hawaii.
Osteoporosis: Prevention and Treatment is slated from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Kaiser Permanente’s Kona Clinic. Attendees will learn the signs of osteoporosis, risk factors, prevention and treatment strategies, and how nutrition and exercise can help strengthen bones. Registration is required; call 334-4400.
A keiki passenger safety event is planned from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kona Women Infants and Children Clinic in the Kealakekua Business Plaza, 81-980 Halekii St. Certified safety technicians will check children’s car and booster seats for proper installation. Kaiser members and nonmembers must make an appointment by calling 933-4587.
Labor camp survivor
to speak Thursday
Maria Anne “Hansi” Hirschmann will speak at the Kona Women’s Connection’s quarterly meeting slated from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Nani Mau Gardens, 421 Makalika St., Hilo. The author of “Hansi: The Girl Who Left the Swastika” will speak about “eternal beauty.”
Born in Czechoslovakia, Hirschmann was raised in foster care and selected for training to be a Nazi Youth leader. When Germany fell, her world was shattered. After spending several months in a communist labor camp, she miraculously escaped and eventually found freedom in West Germany.

Yamanaka to perform Friday at Imiloa
Mark Yamanaka will perform at an Imiloa After Dark program at 7 p.m. Friday in Imiloa Astronomy Center’s planetarium. Four-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning Yamanaka will talk story and play selections from his debut album.
Admission is $12 for members; $15 for nonmembers. Purchase tickets at the Imiloa front desk or by calling 969-9703 during regular business hours. Imiloa is located at 600 Imiloa Place in Hilo.
