27 suspected of drunken driving

Police arrested 27 motorists for alleged drunken driving between July 22 and Sunday. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 705 DUI arrests compared with 781 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, 9; Puna, 6; and South Kohala, 2.

There have been 784 major accidents so far this year compared with 841 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent. One fatality was related to drugs only, one to alcohol only and two were related to a combination of both.
