Buddhist teacher to speak in Captain Cook

Tulku Zangpo Rinpoche will share Buddhist teachings Saturday and Sunday at Paleaku Botanical Peace Garden, 83-5401 Painted Church Road, Captain Cook.

Rinpoche will dedicate Saturday to Lama Tarchin Rinpoche, who was a teacher and friend of the Garden. Dharma activities will begin at 10 a.m. Tulku Zango Rinpoche will deliver “Severing the Root of Suffering” from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is on a sliding scale from $40 to $60.

Rinpoche will offer a water blessing from 10 a.m. to noon. This ritual practice promotes healing, encourages a sense of well-being and happiness, mitigates negative Karma, and increases generosity and compassion toward oneself and others. Bring flower offerings. Cost is $20.

Gavin Harrison plans meditation gatherings

Gavin Harrison will lead silent and walking meditation sessions Saturday and Sunday.

Walking Meditation in the Wild in North Kohala is slated from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Iole, the Historic Bond Homestead, 53-496 Iole Road, Kapaau. The program includes an introduction to mindfulness and silent walking meditation. Bring hiking gear, sunscreen, bottled water and a towel or cushion for rest stops.

Sitting and walking meditation, as well as discussion, is slated from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Waimea Events Salon, 66-1664 Waiaka St. Experienced and beginning meditators are welcome. Bring a meditation cushion; chairs are available.

Events scheduled at park’s Kahuku Unit

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Kahuku Unit with free programs to introduce visitors to the park’s southernmost section, now through September. Enter Kahuku on the mauka side of Highway 11 near mile marker 70.5 and meet near the parking area. Sturdy footwear, water, rain gear and a snack are recommended. No advance registration is required, except for the Ka‘u Ohana Day.

An ohia lehua program is offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 18 and Sept. 28. Visitors will learn about the role ohia lehua plays in native Hawaiian forests and the many forms of the ohia tree and lehua flower. Pack a lunch.

Rangers lead a short hike along the Upper Palm Trail to view the Mauna Loa southwest rift zone from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 10 and Sept. 15. From an overlook, rangers will point out numerous prominent geologic features of the rift zone’s many eruptions and discuss the processes that created these features and the cultural traditions associated with them. Pack a lunch.

A guided Palm Trail hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17 and Sept. 29. Highlights of the moderately difficult 2.6-mile loop include relics of the ranching era, sections of remnant native forest and volcanic features from the 1868 eruptive fissures.

People and Lands of Kahuku is a moderate two-mile, three-hour guided hike that loops through varied landscapes to explore the human history of Kahuku. The hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 24 and Sept. 14 and 22.

Senior ID cards will be available in August

The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division will issue senior ID cards for those 60 and older from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 5 at the Kohala CSE; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at Walmart, Kailua-Kona; 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 13 at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center, Waimea; 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at St. Jude’s Church, Hawaiian Ocean View Estates; 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at Hale Hauoli Senior Center, Honokaa; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B.

Seniors line dance class begins Aug. 7

A line dance class for seniors 55 and older begins Aug. 7. Classes are held from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Waimea Community Center. The cost is $10 for 10 weeks.
