The fire, which broke out around 11:15 a.m. Saturday in dry brush along Hulikoa Drive, above the Queen Kaahumanu Highway Matsuyama Food Mart, has consumed an estimated 1,000 acres, according to Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Steve Loyola. Crews are currently working to contain the fire, which is not under control. They are being assisted by two Hawaii County helicopters.

The fire area stretches from Hulikoa Drive mauka toward Wainani Estates and north toward the Lokahi Makai subdivision, both located off Kaiminani Drive. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
