BOSTON — Jacoby Ellsbury and Johnny Gomes homered, and Felix Doubront outpitched Andy Pettitte on Friday night to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the depleted New York Yankees in the opener of their three-game series.

Ellsbury homered on Pettitte’s second pitch of the game, and Gomes made it 3-0 in the second.

Until Lyle Overbay doubled to lead off the fifth inning, Doubront (7-3) held New York’s lineup hitless, though the Yankees were without Derek Jeter and a handful of other regulars. In all, the Red Sox left-hander gave up two runs — one earned — on three hits and three walks while striking out five in 6 1/3 innings. It was the 12th consecutive start in which Doubront has allowed three or fewer earned runs.

Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

MARINERS 10, ASTROS 7

HOUSTON — Rookie Brad Miller hit his first two major league homers and drove in five runs, and Seattle overcame rookie Brandon Barnes’ cycle in the win over Houston.

Miller, who started the season in Double-A, launched a two-run shot to the second deck in right field to chase starter Bud Norris (6-9) and make it 6-2 in the sixth. He finished with three hits and added a three-run homer when he sent a shot into the first row in right field in the eighth.

After doubling in the eight to complete his cycle, Barnes singled in the ninth to finish 5-for-5 and become the first Astro to collect five hits since Hunter Pence did it in May 2008.

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO — Ryan Roberts singled home the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and Tampa Bay beat Toronto to win for the 15th time in 17 games.

Evan Longoria, Wil Myers, Kelly Johnson and Ben Zobrist all went deep off Toronto starter Esmil Rogers, but it was former Blue Jay Roberts whose two-out single off Steve Delabar was the key for the Rays.

ANGELS 4, ATHLETICS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Albert Pujols, Erick Aybar and Mike Trout each homered, Jered Weaver extended his scoreless-innings streak against Oakland to 24 2/3, and Los Angeles came out of the All-Star break with a victory.

ORIOLES 3, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas — Matt Wieters homered, Wei-Yin Chen pitched into the seventh inning, and Baltimore beat Texas to give manager Buck Showalter his 250th victory with the team since being hired in July 2010.

Nick Markakis had an RBI double and a home run-robbing catch for the Orioles.
