Konawaena hoops team to host Utah power
Konawaena’s boys basketball team will play Utah’s Alta High School at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Onizuka Gymnasium.
Alta, from Sandy, Utah, was a Class 5A state runner-up last season. Also on Thursday, Alta will take on Kealakehe at 11 a.m. at Kealakehe and Honokaa at 7 p.m. at Onizuka Gym before spending two days on Oahu as part of a two-island cultural tour.

Parker needs assistant volleyball coach
Parker School seeks an assistant girls volleyball coach for the upcoming fall season.
Practices take place four days per week in Waimea, with matches scheduled on weeknights and Saturday mornings around the island.

Konawaena fall sports meeting Wednesday
Konawaena High will conduct a fall sports meeting for parents who have children participating in high school athletics at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the school’s cafeteria.
Konawaena has named Stacy Brown its varsity cheerleading coach and Penny Racoma its JV cheerleading coach. Any students interested in being on the cheerleading team should attend the meeting.

Beginner golf classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Aug. 17.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

BIRR Mana Road race Aug. 4 in Waimea
The Big Island Road Runners will host the Mana Road 10’s Race at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 4 on Mana Road in Waimea.
The event includes 6.2- and 10-mile races, with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. on Mana Road on race day. Admission is $10 for non-BIRR members and $5 for members.
A postrace ceremony features prizes and refreshments.

Firemen’s Fund Weekend Saturday and Sunday
The Firemen’s Fund Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday on the Kohala Coast.
On Saturday, there will be a four-man scramble at the Hapuna Prince Golf Course. The registration fee is $125, and play begins at noon.
On Sunday, there will be a biathlon at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area. The 400-meter swim and one-mile run will begin at 8 a.m., and the registration fee is $25.
Proceeds will benefit the Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund, a nonprofit charitable foundation for employees of the Hawaii County Fire Department.

Kealakehe football workouts ongoing
The Kealakehe football team’s Prepare to Succeed summer workouts are taking place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from to 3 to 6 p.m. through July 26 at the school’s baseball field.
Students must have completed Department of Education physical examination and parent consent forms on file with the school in order to participate.
Forms are available at Kealakehe’s attendance and main offices. Workouts also require students wearing cleats for outdoor activities and gym shoes for the weight room.

Kealakehe cheerleading tryouts July 22-25
Kealakehe High School will hold cheerleading tryouts for all grades from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. July 22-25 in the wrestling room located in the school’s gymnasium.
Students will need a current physical and a consent form at the first day of tryouts. Forms are available at the administration building’s registrar office.

c Air riflery: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the riflery range
c Bowling: 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in the gymnasium

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms.
Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
The camp fee is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo.
Make checks payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

Mauna Loa time trial Saturday; other events
On Saturday, Hawaii Cycling Club will host its first Mauna Loa Training Time Trial.
This 17.5-mile trial with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet will start at the bottom of Mauna Loa Observatory Road and go up to the Mauna Loa Observatory parking lot.
The event starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 to 7:40 a.m. followed by a pre-race meeting at 7:50 a.m.
The HCC and the Queen Kaahumanu Tri Club also hold the First Tuesday Training Time Trials.
The dates for these training time trials this summer are Aug. 6 and Sept. 3. The 5.1-mile course runs from Kaiminani Drive north to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
The start time is 7 a.m.
