Hawaii’s Schatz raises over $900K during 2Q
HONOLULU — Sen. Brian Schatz raised more than $900,000 during the most recent quarter for his campaign to retain the Senate seat he was appointed to in December.
The senator raised over $1.1 million in the January-March period. The campaign said Tuesday he’s raised more than $2 million altogether.
U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa hasn’t yet released fundraising figures for the April to June quarter. Hanabusa announced her candidacy for the Senate seat in May.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Schatz to fill the vacancy created by Sen. Daniel Inouye’s death even though it was Inouye’s dying wish to have Hanabusa succeed him. Schatz was lieutenant governor at the time.
The Schatz campaign says 73 percent more individuals donated compared to January-March. The campaign has also received money from other senators’ political action committees.
Allegiant to offer Honolulu-L.A. flights
HONOLULU — Allegiant Air, which has cut back some of its Hawaii service, announced Tuesday it will be offering flights between Honolulu and Los Angeles starting in October.
The flights will operate twice a week starting Oct. 30 between Honolulu International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
The Las Vegas-based budget carrier began flying to Honolulu in 2012 with flights from Las Vegas and Fresno, Calif. The airline had previously said it would suspend routes to Honolulu beginning in August from seven cities. Then recently, the airline announced that the Boise, Idaho, and Spokane, Wash., flights will be reinstated for the holiday season.
Nonstop service continues between Las Vegas and Honolulu, and from Bellingham, Wash., to both Maui and Honolulu.
The Honolulu-Los Angeles flights will provide an estimated $26 million in visitor spending and $3 million in tax revenue annually, the Hawaii Tourism Authority said.
The airline is part of Allegiant Travel Co.
Introductory one-way fares starting at $99 are being offered. Tickets must be purchased by July 14 for travel by Feb. 13.
