Cybercrimes expert joins Honolulu prosecutor team
HONOLULU — The former head of the Honolulu Police Department’s white collar crime unit has joined the Honolulu prosecutor’s office.
Thanks to a federal grant, Chris Duque will serve as an investigator in the prosecuting attorney’s white collar crime unit.
The prosecutor’s office says Duque is one of Hawaii’s leading cybercrimes investigators.
Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro said in a statement this week that cybercrimes are a major threat because they can involve anything from identity theft to financial fraud to child pornography.
Duque was also instrumental in forming the Hawaii Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Since retiring from HPD, he’s been an educational speaker and consultant on cybercrimes.
National Guard soldiers, airmen face furloughs
KAPOLEI, Oahu — More than 1,100 National Guard soldiers and airmen in Hawaii will be living with 20 percent less pay over the next three months as the Defense Department carries out automatic federal budget cuts.
They’re among the guardsmen and women across the country the military will be furloughing for one day a week starting Monday.
The cuts mean the helicopter pilots and mechanics, pay and finance clerks and others who keep the guard operating will have eight hours less each week to do their jobs.
It’s not clear precisely what effects the unprecedented cuts will have. They could, however, make it more difficult for the guard to fly helicopters to help put out wildfires or rush to the scene of natural disasters in trucks.
5 injured when slow-moving trains collide on Oahu
HONOLULU — Five people were injured when two slow-moving trains carrying tourists on a pineapple history tour collided in central Oahu.
Paramedics took a 41-year-old woman to the hospital in serious but stable condition Wednesday afternoon. A 24-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services District Chief Arnold Paragoso said three others were treated at the scene but declined to be taken to the hospital.
Paragoso said the two Dole Plantation trains weren’t going very fast when they collided before 2 p.m.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the trains didn’t have any severe damage.
Dole Plantation’s website promotes 20-minute rides on trains called the “Pineapple Express.” The two-mile tours tell the history of pineapple in Hawaii and the founding of the Dole company.
