Hapuna, Kekaha Kai state parks closing early today

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Kekaha Kai State Park will close at 5 p.m. today in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area and Kekaha Kai State Park will close at 5 p.m. today in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

The closures will affect Hapuna’s main beach area as well as the Waialea Bay section, commonly known as Beach 69, and Kekaha Kai’s Mahaiula and Maniniowali, commonly known as Kua Bay, sections, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, which added that fireworks are prohibited at both parks.

Normal park hours will resume on Friday, according to the department. Those hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Kekaha Kai State Park and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.
