Volunteer firefighters cooking breakfast
The Hawaii Volunteer Fire Company 7-Bravo, located at the bottom of Kaiminani Drive in lower Palisades, invites the public to come eat fresh cooked pancakes from 7 to 10 a.m. today at the Palisades Community Pavilion. Juice, coffee, sausage and bacon with a slice of fruit are included. Suggested donations of $5 a plate will be accepted but not necessary.
The breakfast is a benefit for the Daniel Robert Sayre Memorial Foundation. A portion of the proceeds will be sent to the families of the recently fallen firefighters in Prescott, Ariz.
At 9 a.m., the firefighters will recognize the following organizations for contributions and service in upgrading the volunteer station with much needed improvements: Rotary Club of Kona, Palisades Home Owners Association, Greg Knapp Masonry, Kohanakoa Construction, West Hawaii Concrete and Bond Contracting.
Book clubs meeting in Keauhou this month
Free book clubs meet monthly at Kona Stories in Keauhou Shopping Center. Attendees are asked to read the book in advance of the meeting and come prepared for a discussion. They also are asked to bring a favorite pupu or beverage to share. For more information call Brenda or Joy at 324-0350.
Second Tuesday Fiction Group meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss “A Moveable Feast” by Ernest Hemingway. Published posthumously in 1964, “A Moveable Feast” remains one of Hemingway’s most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft.
Just the Facts Group meets at 6 p.m. July 23 to discuss “Hedy’s Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World” by Richard Rhodes. What do Hedy Lamarr, avant-garde composer George Antheil and a cellphone have in common? The answer is spread-spectrum radio: a revolutionary invention based on the switching of communications signals among different frequencies.
College courses
to be offered in Waimea
Kanu o Ka Aina New Century Public Charter School will hosts two college courses this fall.
Hawaiian Studies 100: Piko Hawaii is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Speech 151: Speech and Community from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the school in Waimea.
Tuition scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must be accepted into Hawaii Community College or be a continuing student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo for the fall 2013 semester.
