Zeller to discuss orchids’ preferences
The Kona Orchid Society meets at 6 p.m. Friday at the Hualalai Academy Bridge Building, 74-4966 Kealakaa St., Kailua-Kona. Phoenicia Zeller will discuss orchids sunlight preferences. She will also explain about diseases and pests. All questions will be answered.
A display of orchids by members is planned. A potluck dinner is served at 6:15 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share.

Japanese quilts on display in Waimea
Members of Quilts Lei Hayama of Japan will show their Hawaiian style quilts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. This is the 12th year club members have shown their pieces and demonstrated the fine craft of Hawaiian style appliqued quilting at the gallery. Club president, quilt designer and teacher Shigemi Obata will be the featured quilter with many new quilts designed by herself and her students on display.
Obata teaches quilting in Hayama, Japan, which she learned from Doris Iwalani Feary Nosaka of Hilo. Nosaka introduced Shigemi to the Waimea Quilt Club almost 25 years ago. The Japanese club was founded by Obata and presently has between 15 and 20 students as on-going members. Obata’s classroom features many Hawaiian fabrics and books. Hospital auxilary board meets Monday
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary board meets at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. Visitors are welcome to attend.
Everyone is also invited to stop by the bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.
