APAC offers ‘friendship’ workshop for kids
Aloha Performing Arts Company will offer a six-day theater workshop for 8- to 12-year-olds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, and 25 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu. The theme of the workshop is friendship. On the final day, July 25, there will be a free public showing at 3:30 p.m. of the production which will be developed in six days: “The Good Ship Friendship,” a play featuring jokes, poems, stories, fables, songs and dances, all exploring the many aspects of friendship. Students will be encouraged to contribute personal anecdotes to the show as well.
Tuition is $175, and a limited number of scholarships is available. Primary instructor will be APAC artistic director Jerry Tracy and choreographer will be Nora Frank. Other members of Aloha Teen Theatre will be assisting.
Every student who signs up is guaranteed a role. Participants will receive 30 hours of instruction, and in addition to performing, will assist with technical preparations for the show. All materials necessary for the workshop will be provided, as well as an afternoon snack. Students should bring a lunch each day, and wear closed shoes and modest clothing.

Lavaroots benefit slated for July 10
Lavaroots Performing Arts is holding a benefit at The Blue Dragon Restaurant & Musiquarium from 6 to 10 p.m. July 10. The event includes live music with Lorenzo’s Army, performances by Michal Anna Carrillo and The Lavaroots Dance Company, dinner and a silent auction. The intention of this benefit is to help Lavaroots Performing Arts bring more dance and music to the Big Island; via performances, educational opportunities and workshop events.
Lavaroots is in collaboration with master dancer/drummer Fara Tolno of Guinea, West Africa, and Kissidugu Foundation on two projects this year.
“Yankady, Here is Good?” is a dynamic theatrical dance production to be performed at the Kahilu Theatre on Oct. 19 and 20. “Yankady, Here is Good?” is an original work based in traditional West African dance and music while celebrating the modern fusion of cultures and our place within them.
The second project is the first Merveilles Hawaii Dance and Drum Conferencek from Nov. 6 to 10 in North Kohala. Merveilles Hawaii will bring Hawaiian and African music and dance together in one place. The event features six West African master teachers, highlights local North Kohala kumu Hope Keawe sharing hula, and includes yoga with Kohala’s own Bobby Hoyt. It is a sive-day dance and drum retreat with four dance classes and four drum/balafone classes being offered per day, plus meals, camping, nightly fires, talk stories and festivities.
All proceeds raised from the July 10 benefit will go toward the two projects.
Lavaroots is also working with Kissidugu Foundation to build a school of dance, music and education in Guinea, West Africa. Any proceeds from the fall show and conference will go toward the Africa School Project.
