Kamehameha expert speaks Wednesday
“The Life and Legacy of Kamehameha the Great” is the topic of a talk by Fred Cachola, an authority on the accomplishments of Hawaii’s first monarch. Part of Kona Historical Society’s free monthly Hanohano o Kona/Honoring Kona Lecture Series, Cachola’s presentation will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdayat West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A Council Chamber.
His material will encompass a pair of categories. First, he’ll focus on the birth of Kamehameha and events that influenced the place names of villages in Kohala. Finally, he’ll discuss Kamehameha’s enduring legacy: the mana and character of Hawaii’s most famous hero and inspirational leader.
A member of Malama i na Wahipana o Kohala who was born and raised in that district, Cachola is a retired educator and historian. After 11 years as a Department of Education teacher and principal, he moved on to Kamehameha Schools, where he served as director of the Education Extension Division for 25 years, retiring in 1997. These days he is a volunteer docent at Iolani Palace and Washington Place, as well as helping with numerous educational programs in Kohala and Kona.
Next month’s lecturer will be Capt. Rick Gaffney, who will talk about the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

Hilo class of 1976 plans reunion
Hilo High School’s class of 1976 celebrates its 55th birthday in Kona on July 5 and 6 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Classmates will meet from 5 to 10 p.m. July 5 on the luau grounds for heavy pupu and dancing under the stars to Vision 20/20. On July 6, a golf outing at Big Island Country Club, bowling at KBX Extreme or beach day including volleyball, paddling and kayaking at Keauhou Bay are planned. Heavy pupu and dancing to DJ Red follow from 6 to 11 p.m.at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel’s ballroom.

Flutist to conduct workshop Saturday
Shakuhachi flutist and grand master Riley Lee will conduct a workshop titled “Breathe” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Kokolulu Farm and Blue Sky retreats in Hawi. The fee is $35; enrollment is limited.
