The 15.81-mile training course began with the cyclists starting at the bottom of Kaiminani Drive every 30 seconds, traveling north along Queen Kaahumanu to the Puuanahulu Landfill near Waikoloa.
Penn Henderson won by four minutes. Henderson completed the race in 36 minutes, 5 seconds, averaging 26.29 mph. Jamie Lynch crossed the finish line in second place with a total time of 40:22. Third place was earned by Sean Maynard, 41:29.
Taking first for the women and sixth overall was Kym Kiser. Kiser finished the course in a time of 44:27, averaging 21.34 mph. The second female finisher was Sylvia Ravaglia with a time of 48:13. Pamela Harlow finished third in 51:00.

In celebration of both Father’s Day and Papa Pea’s birthday, Frozen Pea Productions held its Papa Pea’s Birthday Biathlon and Salute to the 70s on Sunday. The race was held near the Kailua Pier and consisted of a half-mile swim followed by a two-mile run.
The morning was bright, and the water was clear as the pea-ticipants began their swim in Kailua Bay. Sprinting into first place overall was Chandler Nacino. Nacino finished in an amazing time of 27:55.
James Resor crossed the finish line in second with a time of 28:26. Not too far behind to earn third with a time of 28:50 was Thad Calciolari. Fourth overall and first for the women was Sarah Chang. Chang completed the training course in a speedy time of 28:53. The second place female and seventh overall finisher was Anita Leao in 29:29. Antonita Villa (finned during the swim) finished third in 30:57.
In the Split Peas race, the team of Cat Woman and Xochitl Reyes finished first with a total time of 23:43. Elastic Man and Christian Hamilton crossed the line at 28:49, putting them in second. Third place was earned by Wonder Woman and Orestes Barrios in 29:01.
As always there was a Pea-wee course. This course is a little shorter (200-yard swim and one-mile run) and open to any who would like to participate. Flying into first place was Kai Hartman. Hartman crossed the finish line in a total time of 13:17. Lainey Eckart earned second place with a time of 14:57. One second behind to claim third was Lawrence Eckart.
For the Pea-wee Split Peas, the team of Superman and Kainoa Chesler finished in first place with a time of 13:18. Wonder Woman and Nophia Pintor earned second place, finishing in 13:25. Third place was claimed by Bat Man and Amanda Schiff at 13:42.
For those who only competed in the half-mile swim, Malia Dills finished first with a time of 15:32. Jennifer Stabrylla, 15:52, earned second; Denise Boatwright finished third in 16:35. Congratulations to all who participated in this month’s Frozen Pea Productions training race. You all had pea-riffic performances.
The next Frozen Pea Productions race will be held on July 21.
The Peaman Red, White and Blue Biathlon will include a half-mile swim followed by a 3.5-mile run.
Team Mango Races is hosting its annual Summer Solstice Run today. The training run will be held at the Natural Energy Lab’s beach access area. There will be three distances to choose from: the King’s Trail, seven miles on the challenging Ala Loa trail; the Beach Stroll, four miles on both packed sand and dirt; or the Beach Sprint, a one-mile sprint in the packed sand and dirt. This is a free community event and open to all. Race start is set for 5 p.m.
Also today, the Aloha Friday Run is being held to kick off the Kona Marathon events. This 5K run/jog/walk will start and end at Kona Commons Shopping Center at 5:30 p.m. Race entry is now $20 and can be turned in from 2-5 p.m. at Kona Commons.
Sunday is the 20th annual Kona Marathon. This year the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K are being held at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. All races will begin at Keauhou Shopping Center, run north, and double back to finish located at the resort grounds.
The marathon will start at 5:30 a.m. with the half, 10K and 5K distances following shortly after. For more information, please visit konamarathon.com.
The Hapuna Rough Water Swim will be held June 29 at the Hapuna State Beach Park at 8 a.m. The one-mile swim is part of the triple crown races (along with the Cinco de Mayo and King’s Swim) and is a fun tradition for swimmers on the Big Island.
Registration is now $30 for ages 10 and over and $25 for ages 10 and under. Hope to see you out there.
