Ordnance investigation continues in Waimea

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District, in coordination with the state Department of Health and various Hawaii County safety and law enforcement agencies, successfully investigated for ordnance June 17 at the Sandalwood Subdivision area along Kawaihae Road in Waimea.

No major incidents occurred. Work will continue today within the Sandalwood Subdivision area and is not expected to affect traffic on Kawaihae Road, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

Officials encouraged the public to remember the three Rs of unexploded ordnance safety: Recognize, Retreat, and Report. Recognize suspicious items and remember their locations. Retreat without touching or going near them. Report, call 911 and report what you saw.

Firefighters continue mop-up efforts in Waimanu Valley

Firefighters Tuesday continued efforts Tuesday to extinguish a brush fire that broke out Sunday morning in Waimanu Valley.

The fire has burned about 2 acres within the Hamakua district, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Firefighters, who had to be flown in with a helicopter, spent the day dousing remaining hot spots and flare-ups.

The fire, which is listed as contained, was expected to be declared out Tuesday night.
