The Mahailua section of Kekaha Kai State Park is closed for the day following a reported shark attack.

A 29-year-old Kailua-Kona man was snorkeling about 20 yards offshore when he was attacked by a 12- to 14-foot tiger shark shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to witnesses and the Hawaii Police Department. The man was bitten on the right leg.

The man was transported by county helicopter to Kona Community Hospital. Police say his injuries were not life-threatening.
