A 25-year-old man was allegedly bitten by a shark at Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona today. The attack occurred sometime between 12:45 and 1 p.m., said Gerald Kosaki, Hawaii Fire Department battalion chief who oversees special operations, the hazardous material teams and rescue personnel.
Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel are currently responding to the scene. Upon arrival, they will treat and transport the victim, as well as assess the situation. The man was reportedly bitten right above his knee, Kosaki said.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has been notified. The beach will likely be closed until air surveillance finds no sightings of sharks in the area, Kosaki said.
