Firefighters are continuing efforts Tuesday to extinguish a brush fire that broke out Sunday morning in Waimanu Valley.

The fire, which ignited about 8:44 a.m. Sunday, has burned about 1.5 acres within the Hamakua district, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Firefighters, whom had to be flown in with a helicopter, are dousing remaining hot spots and flare-ups.

The fire, which is listed as contained, should be declared out by this evening, according to DOFAW.
