Kona Frame Shop will exhibit “Island People … Island Places,” by artist Dick Harrison through July. From colorful plein air Hawaii landscapes, to detailed black and white graphite portrait studies of Polynesian women, Harrison’s stylistic approach to both mediums will be on display.
Painting, drawing and woodcarving since childhood, Harrison’s formal art training began during a high school summer session held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. After serving in the Navy, and with the benefits of the G.I. Bill, Harrison studied commercial art at the Rocky Mountain School of Art.
Harrison retired as a railroad switchman and conductor in 2002, when he and his wife returned to the islands. Harrison is currently pursuing his second career in fine art, working out of his Kailua-Kona studio.
Harrison is a member of the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters and has shown some of his work at venues including Isaac’s Art Center Museum and Gallery in Waimea, Sunny Pauole’s gallery in Holualoa and Trudy’s Fine Arts.
Kona Frame Shop, 74-5484 Kaiwi St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
