Indians put SS Asdrubal Cabrera on 15-day DL
NEW YORK — The Cleveland Indians put All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a strained right quadriceps, an injury that could sideline him for a month.
Manager Terry Francona said Cabrera could miss three to four weeks, although he said that’s merely a guess.
Cabrera had to be helped off the field Monday night at Yankee Stadium after hurting himself running out a grounder. He returned to Cleveland for an MRI.
The Indians recalled infielder Juan Diaz from Triple-A Columbus. Mike Aviles started at shortstop Tuesday night against New York and will get the majority of the playing time, Francona said.
Cabrera is hitting .254 with five home runs, 25 RBIs and a team-leading 18 doubles. He also has a 32-game errorless streak despite playing the past few weeks with quad problems. The 27-year-old Cabrera made the AL All-Star team in each of the past two seasons.
The 24-year-old Diaz made his big league debut with Cleveland last year and played five games. He was hitting .211 with four homers and 18 RBIs at Triple-A this season.
Kings top Blackhawks in Game 3 of West finals
LOS ANGELES — Slava Voynov had a goal and an assist, Jonathan Quick made 19 saves, and the Los Angeles Kings beat Chicago 3-1 in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Tuesday night, trimming the Blackhawks’ series lead to 2-1.
Justin Williams also scored, and Dwight King added an empty-net goal in the defending Stanley Cup champions’ 15th consecutive home victory since March. The Kings have won eight straight home playoff games dating to last season’s title clincher, and they never trailed while ending the top-seeded Blackhawks’ five-game postseason winning streak.
Game 4 is Thursday night.
Bryan Bickell scored, and Corey Crawford stopped 25 shots for the Blackhawks, who chased Quick from Game 2 and earned back-to-back home wins to open the series last weekend.
Quick returned to Conn Smythe Trophy form in Game 3, highlighted by a dazzling late save on Bickell, while his teammates generated just enough offense to hold off the Blackhawks.
Giants DE Pierre-Paul has back surgery
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul should be ready for the start of the season after having surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back on Tuesday.
In calling the operation successful, the team announced the prognosis for the two-time Pro Bowl selection’s recovery as being about 12 weeks. That means Pierre-Paul is expected to miss all of training camp and most of the preseason but should be ready for the Giants’ regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 8.
“I’m going to do everything the doctors tell me to do during my rehab so I can be back playing the game I love at a high level as quickly as possible,” Pierre-Paul said in a statement released by the team. “This procedure is going to get me fully healthy, and there should be no more pain.”
Selected in the first round of the 2010 draft, Pierre-Paul has 27½ sacks in 48 games.
Keselowski loses six points for Dover infraction
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR penalized Brad Keselowski and crew chief Paul Wolfe on Tuesday for failing a post-race inspection at Dover.
Keselowski and car owner Roger Penske were each docked six points, and Wolfe was fined $25,000. He was already on probation until the end of the year because NASCAR found illegal parts on the No. 2 Ford at Texas in April.
The loss of points drops Keselowski, the defending Sprint Cup champion, from eighth to 10th in the standings.
Penske Racing said a broken part led to the front end of the care being too low in Sunday’s race.
