Source: Malone to become Kings’ coach

OAKLAND, Calif. — Incoming Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is already making moves to rebuild the fallen franchise.

The Kings have an agreement in place with Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone to be their head coach, a person familiar with the decision said Thursday night.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly, said Malone was Ranadive’s top choice. Ranadive has been a minority owner of the Warriors the past three seasons and is in the final stages of closing a sale with the Maloof family to buy the Kings.

Malone’s hiring officially ends Keith Smart’s tenure. Smart took over the Kings for the fired Paul Westphal in January 2012 and had one year remaining on his contract.

Yahoo Sports, which first reported the agreement, said Malone’s deal is for four years and $9 million, with the fourth year being a team option.

Warriors foward Lee undergoes hip surgery

OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State Warriors All-Star power forward David Lee had surgery Thursday to repair a torn right hip flexor, an injury that forced him out of the starting lineup and limited his minutes in the playoffs.

The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, the team said. Lee will start rehabilitation in the next 10 to 14 days.

No further timetable on his recovery was announced.

During the regular season, he averaged 18.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Lee led the NBA with 56 double-doubles and became Golden State’s first All-Star since Latrell Sprewell in 1997.

Hoppe sets scoreless inning mark

CARY, N.C. — Minnesota State, Mankato, right-hander Jason Hoppe has set the NCAA single-season record with 55 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Hoppe pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in the Mavericks’ 6-5 victory over St. Edward’s on Thursday night to help them advance to the school’s first Division II national championship game. Hoppe’s streak ended with a one-out single in the fourth inning. He broke the previous record of 54 set by SIU-Edwardsville’s Kyle Jones in 2006.

Hoppe’s streak started on April 7 against Augustana, more than seven weeks ago. He allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings and did not factor in the decision.

The Mavericks (42-8) will play either Tampa or Grand Valley State in the title game on Saturday.

Yanks plan to activate Pettitte on Monday

NEW YORK — The Yankees plan to activate Andy Pettitte from the disabled list on Monday and start the left-hander that night against the Cleveland Indians.

Pettitte, who turns 41 next month, came out of a start against Seattle on May 16 because of a tight left trapezius muscle, near his pitching shoulder. He went on the DL the following day.

Pettitte said Thursday that the injury essentially was a back spasm. He threw 76 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday in Florida.
