Jazz artist Liane Carroll will open Hawaii Performing Arts Festival’s ninth season July 9 at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. Carroll, named 2012 Vocalist of the Year by the British Jazz Awards, recently released her latest CD, “Ballads,” to rave reviews in the UK.

Korean-American violinist Chee-Yun will take to the Kahilu Theatre stage July 13. Other HPAF events include a multimedia, string concert in Hilo and a night of opera at Huggo’s in Kailua-Kona, plus three complete operas, a collaboration with Honokaa jazz musician Gary Washburn, Baroque pieces and a Broadway review. HPAF performances are slated for seven venues islandwide. Many concerts are free to the public.

Lifelong Singer, an adjunct program of HPAF, is open to adult singers of all abilities July 1 to 5. Participants may study opera, jazz, pop or art song, with an emphasis on vocal technique, with lessons, coaching, master classes and performance opportunities. Carroll will be in residence July 4 and 5 to collaborate with students on song interpretation.

HPAF offers 10 free concerts, awards scholarships to young artists from Hawaii, supports local food banks, and works with local nonprofits to provide free concert tickets to disadvantaged adults. Children younger than 12 are admitted free to all concerts. HPAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization, recently created a membership society.

Volunteers and housing assistance are needed for the 2013 season. For more information or to buy tickets, visit hawaiiperformingartsfestival.org or call 333-7378. Like HPAF at facebook.com/hawaiiperformingartsfestival.
