More than 200 Hawaii Island students participated in Recycle Hawaii’s eighth annual Art of Recycling School Competition.
The North Hawaii exhibit held April 6 to 12 at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea featured 32 recycled art entries, created by more than 45 students. Award winners included levels one, two and three students of Waimea Country School, Dakota Millar, Malu Montgomery, Mikael Caverly, Taylor Reyes, Arel Urbanozo, Sadie Giltner, Alijah Swan, Kyahbin Swan, Zaiah Swan, Raya Rogers, Elijah Rogers, Gillian Kleila, Eric Fetsch and Emily Whitfield. Susan Champeny, Jay West, Janice Gail and the staff of Firehouse Gallery and Waimea Arts Council judged the entries.
The West Hawaii exhibit was held April 13 to 18 at the Kona International Market. More than 75 students entered 56 pieces of recycled art. Award winners included Derek Berges, Aleixei Rosales, Julia Grabowski, Cody Kahulamu, Keelie Carlucci, Melia Lefleur, Mrs. Sutter’s class, Isabella Zambrana, Breeze Chinen, Maia Damazo, Robert Dempsey, Rylee Galieto, Ethan Thieme, Michael DeCarli, Justice Wong, Briana Taketa, Monilaite Moniati, Ms. Lander’s middle school art class and Tehina Otare. Judges included “Bolo,” Sandi Faffbendar, Mark White, Beverly Aikele, Jan Prokopowich, Karen Hamilton, Debi Armitage and Pat and Rich Aarhus.
The East Hawaii exhibit was held April 20 to 25 at Prince Kuhio Plaza and featured 58 entries created by more than 85 students. Award winners included Rowan Hall, Kaimi Galima-Elvena, Benjamin Wyatt, kindergarten through second-grade students of Volcano School of Arts & Sciences, Zeffy Adolf, Sydirah Aricayos, Maya Atwal, Mason Hirata, Destiny Hironaka, Dylan Honda, Keilynn Kunimoto, Megan Nakamoto, Emmy Okinaka, Stacy Watkins, Yukon Yomono, Saphire Kahakua-Brown, Chrystal Quiros, Kilinoelehua Helm, Leilauna Olson, Jakob Au, Caleb Dewan, Imani Swain, Lakiesha Anderson, Elizabeth Pezzuto, Cassidy Wilbur, Aubree Silva, Kaitlyn Marumoto-Torres, Gracie Rogers, Sarah Brinkman, Aliya Smigel and Nohea Silva. Judges included Susan Champeny, Beverly Crudele, Philip Mundon, Chris Takara, Abraham Medeiros, Clarita Corpuz, Beverly Kahikina, Marie Kuramoto, Mae Ness and Elvin Derkelsen.
