Elderly Recreation Services offers senior yoga classes for anyone 55 and older. These gentle yoga classes feature a series of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress. Classes are held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays, June 18 and 25 at Painted Church; 8:30 a.m. Mondays through June 24 at Hale Halawai; and at 8:30 a.m. Fridays through June 28 at Hale Halawai. The cost is $5 per class; register and pay at the first meeting. Bring a beach towel or yoga mat and water for class. For more information, call Elderly Recreation Services at 323-4340.

Kealakekua library announces reading program schedule

The Kealakekua Public Library will hold its summer reading program “Dig Into Reading” from Monday to July 6. The program will feature crafts and other special events for all ages, with prizes for reading books. Children can enter to win a Dairy Queen gift card. Rising seventh-graders and teenagers can enter to win an iPod Shuffle. Adults can win a tablet.

The scheduled events include:

c Kids’ Plaster Fossils, for children 8 and older, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday

c Bean Planting/MUDD Snack, 5 and older, at 11 a.m. June 8

c Beaded Bugs, 12 and older, at 5:30 p.m. June 12

c Ikebana, teens and adults, at 11 a.m. June 15

c Rice Paper Wall Art, adults, at 5:30 p.m. June 19

c Butterfly Masks, 8 and older, at 3 p.m. June 21

c Face Painting, 5 and older, at 11 a.m. June 22

c Gardening Feng Shui, adults, at 5:30 p.m. June 26

c Storyteller Dave Del Rocco, 5- to 12-year-olds, at 11 a.m. June 29

All programs run approximately one hour; all children 5 and younger must be accompanied by a parent. A sign language interpreter or other accommodation may be arranged by the library with three weeks advance notice.

The Kealakekua Public Library is open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, contact the library at 323-7585.

Toastmasters open house planned Tuesday

The Kona Toastmasters will hold an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 75-1000 Henry St., formerly the Borders Books store. Attendees will see how the group’s learn-by-doing method can help them become better speakers and leaders.

Light pupu and beverages will be provided.

Kona Toastmasters meets the first and third Tuesday of each month; the public is welcome to attend.

Wong graduates
from basic training

Air Force Airman Destiny K. Wong graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Wong is the daughter of Nicol Colon of Aurora, Colo., and granddaughter of Margeret Wong of Pahoa. She is a 2011 graduate of Cherokee Trail High School, Aurora, Colo.

Lomberg completes first year at
U.S. Naval Academy

Jonathan Lomberg has completed his first year at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., having undergone a grueling 13-hour Sea Trials and completed final exams.

A graduate of Kealakehe High School, Lomberg is from Honaunau.

UH-Hilo scholarship for student with a disability available

An annual scholarship is available to a student with a disability, superior scholastic performance and plans to enroll, or is currently enrolled, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in the fall. The student may enroll full or part time and must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. The application deadline is June 30.
