Police arrested 19 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 20 and Monday; five were involved in traffic accidents; two were younger than 21.

Police arrested 19 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 20 and Monday; five were involved in traffic accidents; two were younger than 21.

Police have made 534 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 585 during the same period in 2012, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested nine motorists, Kona officers arrested six and South Kohala officers two, according to police. Puna and North Kohala officers arrested one motorist in each district.

There have been 558 major accidents this year compared with 612 during the same period in 2012. To date, there have been 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 14 at this time in 2012. To date, one fatality was related to drugs; one to alcohol and two to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
