Kukio Challenge Sunday at Kukio Bay
The 12th annual Kukio Challenge will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The race features a half-mile swim, three-mile run, and a two-mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard course.
Athletes age 14 and older may register for the event, which is limited to 100 entrants.
The cost is $65, and athletes must register online at kukio.net by 3 p.m. Friday. Participants may register on race day for $75.
Proceeds benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that aims to ensure protection of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.

Parks and Recreation wrestling in Waimea
Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Waimea will offer free summer youth wrestling classes for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Beginning June 4, classes will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Waimea Community Center.

Kealakehe football summer workouts begin Monday
The Kealakehe football team’s Prepare to Succeed summer workouts will begin Monday.
Workouts will take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from to 3 to 6 p.m. through July 26 at the school’s baseball field. Students must have completed Department of Education physical examination and parent consent forms on file with the school in order to participate.
Forms are available at Kealakehe’s attendance and main offices.
Workouts also require students wearing cleats for outdoor activities and gym shoes for the weight woom.

College-prep hoops camp June 3-7
Hawaii Island Hoops will hold its college-prep basketball camp June 3-7 at the Kekuaokalani Gym. Registration is ongoing.
The camp includes Nike SPARQ Training, daily fundamental training workouts, shooting clinics, defensive breakdowns, team offense, individual skills competitions, a team tournament and a championship game.
There will also be a 3-point shootout, free-throw and slam dunk contests, all-star games and an awards ceremony.
The camp is open to boys ages 13-19 who are looking to improve their skills and learn a college-style program.
The registration fee is $350 and includes instruction from NCAA, NAIA and junior college players and coaches, and evening college-prep seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment. All meals are included in the registration fee.

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms.
Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
Players may register by July 15 for $60.
Late enrollment is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani Street in Hilo.

Cycling club announces summer events
On June 15, the Hawaii Cycling Club will host its 16-mile Almost Summer Solstice Training Time Trial from Kaiminani Drive north to Puuanahulu Landfill Road,
Then on July 13, the club will host its first Mauna Loa Training Time Trial.
This 17.5 mile-trial with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet, will start at the bottom of Mauna Loa Observatory Road and go up to the Mauna Loa Observatory Parking Lot,
Both events start at 8 a.m. with registration from 7-7:40 a.m. followed by a pre-race meeting at 7:50 a.m.
The HCC and the Queen Kaahumanu Tri Club also hold the First Tuesday Training Time Trials.
The dates for these training time trials this summer are June 4, July 2, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3.
The 5.1-mile course runs from Kaiminani Drive north to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
The start time is 7 a.m.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Saturday.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf.
Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

HIBT fishes
for volunteers
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for more than 50 volunteers to help with the running of the 54th annual tournament. A variety of tournament support is needed, including Kailua Pier operations, the HIBT retail store and administration.
Each volunteer will receive an HIBT T-shirt and discounted parking for shift volunteers. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier. Tournament volunteers are needed from July 21 through August 13.

Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 6 and 7.
The clinic will begin at 10 a.m. both days, with clinic-day registration at 9 a.m. June 6.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days.
Runners who register before Friday receive a $10 discount.

The Hapuna Roughwater Swim, the second leg of Bike Works Beach & Sports’ triple crown of swimming, will take place at 8 a.m. June 29 at Hapuna Beach State Park.

Mauna Kea Golf Course will host its 40th annual pro-am tournament July 1-5. The total purse for pro golfers is $10,000.
Entries are limited to the first 26 paid teams by Saturday.
Tournament entry fees are $8,700 per team of four or $2,900 per amateur.
Entry fees include dinner functions (spouses included), amenity tournament gifts and prizes, and green and cart fees for two practice and three tournament rounds.
Practice rounds will be July 1 and 2, and tournament play will begin July 3.
