Waimea Community Theatre will kick off its 50th anniversary performance season with Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man.” The production will run in mid-August in Waimea. Preparations are under way, with auditions planned for 6 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Wednesday at the organization’s office and rehearsal space, above the Tropical Dreams Ice Cream warehouse on Lalamilo Farm Road.
The musical centers on the life of con man Harold Hill who poses as a band organizer and leader, selling pricey instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. In River City, Iowa, prim librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo sees through him, but begins to fall in love with Harold. Harold, in turn falling for Marian, lingers and risks being caught.
Parts are available for children through seniors — the play calls for townspeople and an extensive chorus. Principal singing parts include Harold Hill, a young to middle-aged man; Marian, a lovely young lady; Marian’s mother and brother; the mayor and his wife; and Harold’s colleague who lives in River City. Various townspeople have minor roles.
Those auditioning will read from the script and sing songs from the show; scripts and music will be provided. They should dress comfortably as dance or movement is likely to be part of the process.
