Cunningham to speak at Wednesday Rotary meeting

Ellen Cunningham, president of Hawaii Island Growing Our Own Teachers, will speak at a Kona Sunrise Rotary meeting Wednesday.

The organization works to provide education grants to Hawaiian Island students pursuing certification to teach in Hawaii Island schools. Five teachers have benefited from the program in the past three years. The organization also works with the Kapilina Brick Garden project to benefit other island nonprofits. In addition to these items, Cunningham will address literacy in Hawaii schools and Achieve3000.

Kona Sunrise Rotary meets from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. every Wednesday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Breakfast is served for $10 per person. Rotarians and persons of good character are welcome to attend.

Kopp leads presentation at Regency

A “Living Life to the Plus” presentation is slated at 1 p.m. Thursday on the activity lanai at the Regency at Hualalai in Kailua-Kona. The event is free to the public, with plenty of parking.

Library to host space, stars, planets presentation

“Planets, Stars and How to Live on a Space Station” is slated for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Allan Honey, a program engineer at Keck Observatory, will speak about the distances between stars and planets. His son, Ben Honey, a flight controller for the International Space Station at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, will explain what happens when astronauts live and work in space.

This free program is offered as a community service by Friends of the Libraries, Kona.

Date change for film screening

“Seeds of Aloha,” a documentary film about the life of slack-key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr., will be screened Saturday at Aloha Theatre. The film was to be shown May 9 but a scheduling conflict precipitated the date change.

The event in Kainaliu begins with a 5 p.m. music workshop for ticket holders. Live music by Kahumoku and special guests is planned from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The film runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Elder abuse discussion planned Friday

Lexi McKay of the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Unit of the Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will share information for kupuna and their support network from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tutu’s House in Waimea.

Attendees will learn how to recognize and avoid financial exploitation, and what resources are available in the community to report abuse and arrange services to remain at home, safe and independent.

There is no charge to attend programs at Tutu’s house, though tax-deductible donations are welcome.

AARP driver course offered

Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Class at 1 p.m. May 27 at the Palisades Recreation Center.

This refresher course for older drivers does not include driving or written tests. Topics discussed include safety rules, road rage and problems at intersections.

Some automobile insurance companies offer a discount to those who complete the course.
