Gilbert “Mr. B” P. Benevides Sr., 83, of Hilo died May 7, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 18, 1929, in Hilo, he was a retired water meter reader for the Hawaii County Department of Water Supply, sheet metal fabricator and game cock fighter; Army Korean War veteran and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo and the Holy Name Society.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. May 20 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 7 p.m. wake service. Friends may also call at 8:30 a.m. May 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10:30 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

HE is survived by wife, Marie Benevides of Hilo; son, Gilbert (Mary Lou) Benevides Jr. of Hilo; daughters, Natalie (Chad) Chaves and Yvonne (Paul, Jr.) Caitano, both of Hilo; brothers, Anthony (Etta) Benevides and William Benevides, both of Hilo; sister, Fannie (Richard) Gouveia of Kona; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
