West Hawaii Dance Academy presents “The Little Mermaid Ballet” as its spring recital at a single 3 p.m. performance May 26 at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.
Featuring dozens of students and pianist Megumi Kopp, the performance is an annual fundraiser for the dance academy.
The classic story tells the tale of Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.
Joining Ariel are her best friends — the adorable, but shy Flounder; a reggae singing Caribbean crab Sebastian; and her “on land” bird friend, Scuttle.
Ariel loves all things “above water,” even though that world is forbidden. After saving the handsome Prince Eric from drowning, the slimy Flotsam and Jetsam twin eels have a plan to help her fulfill her dream. It will take all of Ariel’s courage and determination to make her dreams come true — and save her father’s beloved kingdom from the sneaky sea witch Ursula.
The cast includes Joy Choe, Lorenzo Arnouts, Tai King, Jayne Campbell, Mako Yamamoto, Soleil Fitz-Gerald, Tori Navarro and Shaena Rosario. Narration is by Barbara Pritchard, and choreography is by Virginia Holte, Midori Satoh and Jenna Power.
Tickets are $20 for adult general admission; $10 for students and seniors. Younger than 5 are free.
For more information or to reserve tickets, call the academy at 329-8876 or visit whdt.org.
